Legislature advances Roeder vacation pay bill

AUGUSTA - The Maine House and Senate gave initial approval to a proposal this week that would help ensure employees receive vacation pay upon cessation of their employment. The measure is sponsored by Rep. Amy Roeder, D-Bangor.

As amended by the Legislature's Labor and Housing Committee, LD 225 would require employers to pay employees unused accrued vacation time upon cessation of their work, beginning on January 1, 2023. Public employers and employers with 10 or fewer employees would not be subject to this proposal.

"This bill eliminates questions employers and employees have related to fair pay when it comes to vacation time accrual," said Roeder. "Further, it normalizes the practice of compensating workers for the time they have rightfully earned."

LD 225 faces further votes in the coming weeks.

Roeder is serving in her first term and represents a portion of Bangor in the Maine House. She is a member of the Legislature's Labor and Housing Committee.
