Legislature advances measure to require Maine law enforcement to carry Narcan

AUGUSTA - The Maine Legislature voted this week to advance LD 1036, An Act to Require All Uniformed Patrol Officers to Carry Naloxone Hydrochloride when on Duty. The bill is sponsored by Rep. Nina Milliken, D-Blue Hill.

As amended, the bill would require uniformed patrol officers to carry Naloxone Hydrochloride, also known by the brand name Narcan, on their person or in their police vehicle.

"With this week's votes, Maine is one step closer to saving more lives of folks who live with substance use disorder," said Milliken. "Our state lost 716 friends, neighbors and loved ones to overdoses last year, and those people are missed every single day. We have an obligation to work to reduce this number. This legislation will do that and help keep more Maine families whole."

The bill faces further votes in the House and Senate in the coming weeks.

Milliken, a member of the Criminal Justice and Public Safety Committee, is serving her first term in the Maine House and represents Blue Hill, Brooksville, Castine, Sedgwick, Surry and Trenton.
