Legislature advances Maine Climate Corps funding proposal

AUGUSTA - The Maine House enacted legislation Thursday to provide funding for the Maine Climate Corps, a program that gained unanimous support in the Environment and Natural Resources Committee last year, sponsored by Rep. Morgan Rielly, D-Westbrook.

If passed into law, LD 1974 would provide appropriations from Maine's General Fund to support the Maine Climate Corps, a job-generating service program for Mainers interested in addressing the states most pressing climate-related challenges.

"I am thankful for the work done to support the Maine Climate Corps," said Rielly. "We are now one step closer towards securing the funding necessary to address Maines current climate crises and prevent further climate-related issues in our communities. The Maine Climate Corps will benefit Mainers across the state for years to come."

Additionally, LD 1974 would authorize funding for the Maine Service Fellows, a program aimed at addressing gaps in service programming in rural communities, also sponsored by Rielly and signed into law last year.

The legislation now moves to the Special Appropriations Table.

Rielly is serving his first term in the Maine House of Representatives as a member of the Joint Standing Committee on Veterans and Legal Affairs. He represents a portion of Westbrook.
