Legislative leaders advance Russell's property tax relief proposal

AUGUSTA - The Legislative Council recently voted to advance a bill from Rep. Ron Russell, D-Verona Island, that would provide property tax relief to Mainers by expanding the existing Property Tax Fairness Credit.

"This fall, I have met with more than 100 older residents of my district to talk about property tax relief programs. Those conversations have made it clear just how much our neighbors are struggling to afford to stay in their homes, especially when they are on fixed incomes," said Russell. "Hearing directly from my constituents has only strengthened my belief that we in the Legislature have more work to do when it comes to easing the burden of property taxes and supporting older Mainers."

The Property Tax Fairness Credit reimburses eligible Maine homeowners and renters for property taxes they have paid in a given year. If the credit exceeds the amount of income tax owed for that year, the excess is refunded to the tax filer.

Lawmakers will consider Russell's bill when the Legislature reconvenes in January. Russell is serving his first term in the Maine House. He is a member of the Labor and Housing Committee and represents Bucksport, Orland, Penobscot and Verona Island.
