AUGUSTA - The Maine House of Representatives gave final approval on Thursday to LD 1520, sponsored by Rep. Cheryl Golek, D-Harpswell, which would direct the Maine Department of Education and the Maine Department of Health and Human Services to study the feasibility of placing child care facilities in schools.
"A strong Maine economy requires a better child care infrastructure," said Golek. "At a time when parents are struggling to find adequate child care to meet their busy demands of work and life, we must look for innovative ways to improve availability and affordability. This bill will bring key stakeholders to the table to look into a potential solution to support Maine families."
The study would focus on providing child care to the infants, toddlers and preschool children of school employees, along with other community members as space allows. The study would also explore how facilities could be used to provide students with opportunities for on-site training in child development and child care courses. A report of the study's findings would be due to the Legislature's Education and Cultural Affairs Committee no later than December 2023.
The bill faces additional votes.
Golek, a member of the Inland Fisheries and Wildlife Committee and the Joint Select Committee on Housing, is serving her first term in the Maine House and represents Harpswell and part of Brunswick.
