AUGUSTA - The Maine House of Representatives approved LD 1440, a bill that would provide municipal funding for the purchase of safe and fitted protective equipment for firefighters who are women.
According to research conducted by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, firefighters face an increased risk of cancer diagnoses and cancer-related deaths of 9% and 14%, respectively, as compared to the general public. Ill-fitting gear, combined with regular interaction with carcinogenic materials, contributes to negative impacts on the health of firefighters.
"Firefighters who are women should not need to worry about their gear holding them back from tending to a burning building or assisting a community member in crisis," said Roeder. "Without the proper tools, how can we expect firefighters to help keep our communities safe while also keeping themselves safe and healthy? This is a public safety issue, and our firefighters should not have to solve it on their dime."
The bill faces further votes in the Senate.
Roeder is serving her first term in the Maine House of Representatives and represents a portion of Bangor. She serves on the Labor and Housing Committee.
