House advances Paulhus bill to adopt original Maine flag

AUGUSTA - After lengthy debate, the Maine House of Representatives voted on Tuesday night to advance legislation sponsored by Rep. Sean Paulhus, D-Bath, to adopt Maine's original flag from 1901 as the states official flag.

"For years, Mainers have proudly displayed the 1901 flag on their porches, in storefronts and as stickers on their vehicles," said Paulhus. "For many of us, this flag represents a symbol of pride, of place and of home. After years of hearing from folks around the state speaking in strong support of restoring the original Maine flag as our official state flag, the Legislature finally took action on behalf of the people. I am incredibly proud and honored to carry this issue forward."

The flag, an image of a blue-colored north star over a lone pine tree on a buff-colored background, was the official flag of Maine from 1901 until 1909, when it was replaced by Maine's current flag.

The bill faces further votes in the House and Senate.

Paulhus is serving his third term in the Maine House and represents the city of Bath. He serves as a member of the Joint Standing Committee on State and Local Government.
