House advances Millett bill to increase CTE region educators' salaries

AUGUSTA - The Maine House of Representatives gave initial approval Monday to a measure sponsored by Rep. Rebecca Millett, D-Cape Elizabeth, to include more career and technical education (CTE) teachers in the minimum $40,000 salary initiative.

LD 1188 would rectify a minor oversight in legislation passed in 2019 to raise the minimum salary for Maine's educators. The current statutory language references school administrative units, which CTE centers are a part of, but excludes CTE regions. Millett's bill will make sure CTE region educators are treated fairly and equally with CTE centers.

"Every educator who chooses to work in our state is essential to Maines education system," said Millett. "Those who work in CTE regions have an immense impact on the students they serve and deserve to be compensated with the same minimum salary as their fellow educators."

The measure now faces votes in the Maine Senate.

Millett is serving her first term in the Maine House and represents District 30, part of Cape Elizabeth. She sits on the Education and Cultural Affairs Committee. Prior to representing House District 30, Millett served eight years in the State Senate, representing District 29, which includes South Portland, Cape Elizabeth and part of Scarborough.
