House advances measure to require removing snow and ice from vehicles before operating on public roads

AUGUSTA - The Maine House unanimously voted Tuesday to advance LD 522, An Act to Require That Motor Vehicles Be Clear of Snow When Operated on Public Ways. The bill is sponsored by Rep. Bruce White, D-Waterville.

As amended, the bill would require motorists of a passenger vehicle to take measures to prevent snow or ice from falling from their vehicles while operating on Maine roadways. Drivers in violation would face a fine of no more than $50 for a first time offense but subsequent offenses would face a fine between $150 and $250. Finally, the bill under a separate provision would require larger vehicles and trucks to address snow and falling ice falling from these vehicles.

If the measure becomes law, Maine would join other northeast states that require snow and ice to be removed before operating a vehicle.

"Today's action should give motorists greater confidence they are driving on safe roads," said White. "This legislation will enhance public safety, provide accountability and prevent deaths, injuries and damage to vehicles."

The bill faces additional votes in the House and Senate.

White, a member of both the Transportation Committee and the Innovation, Development, Economic Advancement and Business Committee, is serving his third term in the Maine House. He represents part of Waterville.
