AUGUSTA - The Maine House unanimously voted Tuesday to advance LD 287, An Act to Support Parents by Providing a Sales Tax Exemption for Diapers. The bill is sponsored by Rep. Kelly Noonan Murphy, D-Scarborough.
The bill was amended in the House to include a sales tax exemption for adult diapers. Under the amended proposal, all diapers and diaper accessories, such as covers and pins, would receive the exemption.
"This bill will provide much needed relief for hard working Mainers that are struggling to afford basic necessities," said Murphy. "This unanimous vote sends a message to families that we hear their concerns and are working to reduce the costs on items they have no other choice but to purchase."
Twenty-two states currently do not tax diapers, and Maine is the only New England state to do so.
The bill faces additional votes in the House and Senate.
Murphy, a member of the Education and Cultural Affairs Committee, is serving her first term in the Maine House and represents part of Scarborough.
