AUGUSTA - The Maine House of Representatives voted unanimously to advance a proposal on Thursday sponsored by Rep. Kevin O'Connell, D-Brewer, to establish a task force to review the work practices and treatment of pharmacists in Maine.
"Maine pharmacists and pharmacy technicians are overworked, understaffed and dealing with a great amount of workplace stress," said O'Connell. "This task force will be able to gather data on pharmacists' perceptions of staffing, workload conditions and workplace safety. From its report back and recommendations, the Legislature will be better positioned to address working conditions and find areas for improvement."
As amended, LD 275 directs the task force to review the work practices and treatment of pharmacists and to consider the efforts undertaken in other states to do the same. The task force would also be required to report back its findings and any recommendations to the Legislatures Health Coverage, Insurance and Financial Services Committee no later than Dec. 6, 2023.
The bill faces further votes in the House and Senate.
O'Connell is serving his third term in the Maine House and represents most of the City of Brewer. He is a member of the Transportation Committee.
