AUGUSTA - Rep. Nicole Grohoski, D-Ellsworth, introduced LD 1155, An Act To Require Election Transparency and Audits, before the Joint Standing Committee on Veterans and Legal Affairs on Monday.
The four-part bill would require the Maine Office of the Secretary of State to produce and publicly distribute a guide outlining election procedures, formally track election complaints, submit regular post-election summary reports to the Legislature and conduct a pilot post-election audit to ensure the integrity of Maine's future election results.
"Public confidence in our elections is of the utmost importance and must be earned, not taken for granted," said Grohoski. "I personally have great confidence in the election process in Maine because I have worked full days at the polls, hand-counted ballots, observed recounts and done a great deal of research into our systems in order to answer my own and my constituent's questions. However, I'm a believer in gathering baseline data and making improvements to systems, and elections are no exception."
The committee will hold a work session on LD 1155 in the coming weeks.
Grohoski, a member of the Joint Standing Committee on Energy, Utilities and Technology, is serving her second term in the Maine House of Representatives. She represents the communities of Ellsworth and Trenton.
