Gramlich joins leaders from Maine, Quebec to support proposed passenger rail project

AUGUSTA - Rep. Lori K. Gramlich, D-Old Orchard Beach, joined leaders from Maine and Quebec last week to build support for a Montreal-to-Boston passenger train route that would include stops in Old Orchard Beach and other Maine locations.

"This is a great opportunity to enhance and build our local economy in a way that could also cut down on carbon emissions, decrease traffic congestion and help us meet our climate goals," said Gramlich. "In a community like Old Orchard Beach, our economy is built on supporting small businesses, welcoming visitors and protecting our precious natural resources. We have more work to do before we can make it a reality, but this project aligns with what makes our community such a special place to live and to visit year after year".

The proposed route would take passengers from Montreal to Boston in roughly 13 hours. Advocates say the route would also include stops in Bethel, Auburn and Portland.
