AUGUSTA - On Tuesday, Gov. Janet Mills signed legislation sponsored by Rep. Bruce White, D-Waterville, that will require motorists to take measures to prevent snow and ice from falling from their vehicles while operating on Maine roadways.
"With this new law, more Mainers will be safe traveling on our roads in the winter," said White. "It will help provide accountability for drivers and prevent unnecessary deaths, injuries and damage to vehicles."
Maine will now join other states in the northeast that require snow and ice to be cleared from vehicles. Drivers in violation could face a fine of no more than $50 for a first-time offense, while subsequent offenses would be subject to fines between $150 and $250. Under a separate provision, the bill will also require larger vehicles and trucks to clear off snow and ice.
The law will take effect 90 days after the Legislature adjourns.
White, a member of both the Transportation Committee and the Innovation, Development, Economic Advancement and Business Committee, is serving his third term in the Maine House. He represents part of Waterville.
