AUGUSTA - Gov. Janet Mills held a ceremonial bill signing Monday for LD 1974, a measure to fund the Maine Climate Corps and the Maine Service Fellows, programs created through legislation sponsored by Rep. Morgan Rielly, D-Westbrook.
LD 1974 provides over $200,000 in funding to support the Maine Climate Corps, a service program that will generate jobs and build the leadership skills of Mainers interested in addressing climate-related challenges.
Additionally, the law bestows $30,000 in funding to the Maine Service Fellows, a program aimed at addressing gaps in service programming in rural and underserved communities, including workforce development and public health issues.
"I am pleased that the governor has supported these service programs that will help bolster our communities and engage our youth, providing them with new job skills and the opportunity to serve," said Rielly. "The Maine Climate Corps will play a crucial role in helping us meet our climate mitigation goals and assist communities in climate resiliency efforts. The Maine Service Fellows program will assist our communities, not only as they continue to navigate the effects of the pandemic, but with a wide range of issues from climate change to substance use prevention and recovery."
The law goes into effect August 8, 2022.
Rielly is serving his first term in the Maine House of Representatives as a member of the Joint Standing Committee on Veterans and Legal Affairs. He represents a portion of Westbrook.
