AUGUSTA - A bill sponsored by Rep. Kristi Mathieson, D-Kittery, to repeal and replace the charter of the Kittery Water District was ceremonially signed into law by Gov. Janet Mills Monday. The bill passed unanimously in both chambers of the Legislature.
LD 1542 expands the district's corporate limits to include all of Kittery, Kittery Point, the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard and portions of Eliot and York, allowing residents of those areas to serve on the board and vote for board members.
"It was necessary to update the charter to allow the water district to properly represent the people it serves," said Mathieson. "I am grateful that the entire Legislature and Gov. Mills saw the importance of this bill to the people served by the Kittery Water District."
The bill, deemed an emergency measure, went into effect immediately. The Kittery Water District will hold their first vote for the expanded Water District territory and trustees on Sept. 16 at the Kittery Community Center located at 120 Rogers Road.
Mathieson is serving her first term in the Maine House and represents a portion of Kittery. She serves on the Legislature's Health Coverage, Insurance and Financial Services Committee.
