AUGUSTA - On Monday, Gov. Janet Mills signed into law LD 1036, An Act to Require All Uniformed Patrol Officers to Carry Naloxone Hydrochloride when on Duty. The bill is sponsored by Rep. Nina Milliken, D-Blue Hill.
LD 1036 will require uniformed patrol officers to carry Naloxone Hydrochloride, also known by the brand name Narcan, on their person or in their police vehicle.
"This new law will save lives," said Milliken. "If this law had been in place last year, we could have saved some of the over 700 Mainers we lost to preventable overdoses. Requiring law enforcement to carry Narcan will expand its availability and help prevent more Maine families from losing loved ones to substance use disorder."
The new law will take effect on Jan. 1, 2024.
Milliken, a member of the Criminal Justice and Public Safety Committee, is serving her first term in the Maine House and represents Blue Hill, Brooksville, Castine, Sedgwick, Surry and Trenton.
