Dunphy, Talbot Ross statements on Governor Mills' budget proposal

AUGUSTA - Majority Leader Michelle Dunphy, D-Old Town, and Assistant Majority Leader Rachel Talbot Ross, D-Portland, issued the following statements in response to Governor Janet Mills' proposed budget:

From Majority Leader Dunphy:

"The budget Governor Mills provided to the Legislature today is a responsible approach to navigating our state through incredibly difficult times. It is clear from this proposal that the Administration has thought deeply about how best to maintain critical services and invest in the health care infrastructure needed to protect Mainers against COVID-19. As the Legislature returns to session, our members will bring the knowledge and input from their districts to further shape this proposal into a final budget. As House Democrats, we will look at how we may be able to increase items like revenue sharing and the States share of public education funding to give more support to our municipalities."

From Assistant Majority Leader Talbot Ross:

"I want to thank the Governor and her team for preparing a budget that will firstly defend the health and safety of our state against the spreading pandemic. This budget is a clear indicator that the Governor seeks to invest in the futures of our children and care for our seniors. As I work with my fellow legislators in the upcoming session, we will be preparing ways to strengthen this budget proposal so that it can more specifically address care for the racial, Indigenous and tribal communities in our state. While we are navigating through a difficult time as a state and country, we can and must do more for those who have historically faced structural barriers."
