AUGUSTA - Legislation to promote a circular economy by increasing the amount of post-consumer recycled plastic content used in plastic beverage containers, sponsored by Rep. Vicki Doudera, D-Camden, was passed to be enacted by the Maine Senate Monday.
The bill, LD 1467, first advanced in the House and Senate in June 2021. It creates a minimum post-consumer recycled content requirement (PCR) for all plastic beverage containers sold in Maine beginning with 25% PCR by 2026 and increasing to 30% by 2031.
"This bill is a win-win for the economy and the environment and received bipartisan, unanimous support in my committee after a very supportive public hearing," said Doudera. "Making manufacturers accountable for their products is one of the strategies proven to help reduce plastic in our environment, as well as cutting carbon emissions and increasing recycling."
Doudera expressed gratitude to her colleagues for supporting the legislation, which will benefit municipalities, waste haulers, sorting facilities, recycling processors and beverage manufacturers.
"Most importantly, the bill helps Maine reach its climate goals, said Doudera. I look forward to its passage into law."
The bill is now on the governor's desk.
