Doudera bill banning harmful pesticide signed into law

AUGUSTA - A measure to ban the use of chlorpyrifos, LD 316, sponsored by Rep. Vicki Doudera, D-Camden, was signed into law last week by Gov. Janet Mills.

Chlorpyrifos is an organophosphate pesticide that has been shown to cause adverse impacts on humans, animals and the environment. Under LD 316, the Maine Board of Pesticides Control may grant a temporary permit to pesticide applicators who were licensed prior to January 1, 2022, phasing out the use of the pesticide over time.

"I am incredibly proud of the work the Maine Legislature, advocates and supporters of a healthier Maine have done to ensure the passage of this bill," said Doudera. "LD 316 offers an opportunity to protect Maine's farm families, environment, agricultural workforce and food system from a dangerous pesticide that can have lifelong negative impacts."

The measure will go into effect 90 days after the Legislature adjourns this week.

Doudera serves on the Legislatures Joint Standing Committee on Environment and Natural Resources and represents House District 94, which includes Camden, Islesboro and Rockport.
