AUGUSTA - A bill to support life and career education standards for students in primary and secondary schools, LD 68, sponsored by Rep. Edward Crockett, D-Portland, was signed into law Monday by Gov. Janet Mills.
Under the measure, school administrators will offer a variety of opportunities to help students develop habits of efficacy, resourcefulness and adaptability as they continue their education and build their future careers. In addition to the core standards of English language arts, mathematics, science and technology, social studies, visual and performing arts, world languages and health, physical education and wellness, LD 68 requires schools to expose students to a variety of career options. This measure applies to public schools and private schools approved for at least 60% publicly-funded students.
"LD 68 recognizes the importance of preparing our children for life beyond high school," said Crockett. "It is prudent that, upon graduation, our students are ready to take the next steps either in their education or as they enter the workforce, especially during these unpredictable times."
The bill will go into effect 90 days after the Legislature adjourns.
Crockett, who is serving in his second term in the Maine House, represents part of Portland and Falmouth. He serves on the Legislature's Joint Standing Committee on Education and Cultural Affairs.
