Committee unanimously advances Crafts’ legislation to study the feasibility of ferry service to Monhegan Island

AUGUSTA – The Legislature’s Transportation Committee voted unanimously Thursday to advance an amended version of legislation sponsored by Rep. Lydia Crafts, D-Newcastle, that would have the Maine State Ferry Service study the possibility of a consistent ferry service to Monhegan Island.

According to the 2020 census, Monhegan has a year-round population of 64. Seasonal boats carry hundreds of summer visitors to the island daily from Boothbay, New Harbor and Tenants Harbor. But in the winter, islanders find their access to the mainland limited to boat runs two or three days per week based on the postal contracts.

“I am proud of the work the Transportation Committee has done this session to improve mainland access for island communities,” said Crafts, the House chair of the committee. “Without reliable ferry service, island living becomes challenging for families, students face educational barriers and small businesses struggle to survive. This bill represents progress in our ongoing commitment to preserve the unique way of life for island residents.”

The study would include an assessment of the economic and social benefits as well as the challenges of implementing ferry service. It would also assess the infrastructure resources and needs on the island and mainland and the overall feasibility of such a service.

The bill faces votes in the House and the Senate in the coming weeks.

Rep. Crafts is serving her third term in the Maine House and represents Bristol, Damariscotta, Newcastle, Nobleboro and Monhegan Plantation. She serves as House chair of the Legislature’s Transportation Committee.
