AUGUSTA - The Legislature's Labor and Housing Committee voted unanimously, of those present, to advance a bill sponsored by Rep. Amy Roeder, D-Bangor, that would ensure employees receive vacation pay upon cessation of their employment.
The legislation, LD 225, was amended to exempt public employees and employers with 10 or fewer employees. Currently, unused vacation time is required to be paid upon cessation of employment only if an employer's policy states this explicitly.
"Just like a paycheck, vacation time is earned by workers and they deserve to be compensated," said Roeder. "I am thankful for the committee's support and continued interest in protecting wages for Maine workers."
The bill faces further votes in the House and Senate in the coming weeks. If passed into law, the legislation would apply to vacation time accrued on or after January 1, 2023.
Roeder is serving in her first term and represents a portion of Bangor in the Maine House. She is a member of the Legislatures Labor and Housing Committee.
