AUGUSTA - Rep. Mark Bryant, D-Windham, has been appointed to the Registration Plate Working Group for the Department of the Secretary of States' Bureau of Motor Vehicles.
"I have been a member of the Legislature's Transportation Committee for seven years," said Bryant. "I look forward to using all I have learned to help improve our state's vehicle registration plate system, particularly by streamlining the process so that it is less burdensome for municipalities and residents."
The Registration Plate Working Group was formed by the 130th Legislature to study the proliferation of registration plates in Maine. Over the years, Maine has seen an increase in the variety of available registration plates, causing logistical complications in the manufacturing, storage and administration of these plates. This has posed a considerable administrative burden on municipalities and other state offices performing registration.
The working group will document and analyze the challenges related to registration plate manufacturing and storage, assess the benefits and legal issues regarding specialty registration plates, consider competing interests with specialty plates and compare Maines registration plate operations to national and industry standards. The group will then make recommendations to the Legislature based on their findings.
Bryant represents House District 24, part of Windham, and serves on the Transportation Committee and the State and Local Government Committee.
