Aroostook County legislators applaud Canadian border reopening

AUGUSTA - Rep. David McCrea, D-Fort Fairfield, Rep. John Martin, D-Eagle Lake, and Rep. Roland "Danny" Martin, D-Sinclair, have released statements in support of the Biden administration's decision to reopen the Canadian border in November for nonessential travel. The new rules will allow fully vaccinated individuals in Canada to enter the United States regardless of the reason for travel.

"This is absolutely great news, and not just because most of the communities in my district are on the border," said David McCrea. "Reopening will help our entire state. This policy shift clearly shows how vaccinations contribute to Maine's economic recovery and enhance our personal liberty in being able to safely do business and recreate with our neighbors across the border."

"So many families and businesses on both sides of the border will benefit from this reopening," said John Martin. "We have the tools now to make regular border crossings while still protecting the public health of both Americans and Canadians."

"I am heartened to learn of the Biden administration's decision to reopen the border to our friends and family in Canada," said Danny Martin. "After 19 months apart, our small businesses will once again welcome visitors, helping to revitalize our local economy. This step forward brings us closer to understanding how we can best maintain our safety while preserving our relationships with our northern neighbors."

David McCrea is serving his third term in the Legislature and is a member of the Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry Committee and the Education and Cultural Affairs Committee. He represents Caswell, Easton, Fort Fairfield, Hamlin, Limestone, part of Presque Isle, Stockholm and Cyr Plantation, plus the unorganized territory of Connor Township.

First elected to the Legislature in 1964, John Martin is serving his 22nd non-consecutive term in the Maine House, 10 of which he has served as speaker. He has also served four terms in the Senate. Martin serves on both the Appropriations and Financial Affairs Committee and the Inland, Fisheries and Wildlife Committee. He currently represents the communities of Allagash, Ashland, Eagle Lake, Fort Kent, Masardis, New Canada, Portage Lake, St. Francis, Wallagrass and Plantations of Garfield, Nashville, Oxbow, St. John and Winterville, plus the unorganized territory of Northwest Aroostook.

Danny Martin, who is serving his fourth consecutive term in the Maine House, represents the communities of Frenchville, Grand Isle, Madawaska, St. Agatha and Van Buren, plus the unorganized territory of Square Lake, including Cross Lake, Madawaska Lake and Sinclair Townships. He serves as House chair of the Joint Standing Committee on Transportation and is a member of the Joint Standing Committee on Inland Fisheries and Wildlife.
