Governor urges anyone who has experienced damage to report it to 211 or visit the Maine Flood Resources & Assistance Hub

New Harbor, MAINE – Governor Janet Mills visited New Harbor in Bristol today to survey the substantial damage caused by this week’s severe weather event and urge Maine people to prepare for weekend’s storm.

Governor Janet Mills announced today that she has declared a State of Civil Emergency for all of Maine’s coastal counties.

The eight counties – Cumberland, Hancock, Knox, Lincoln, Sagadahoc, Waldo, Washington, and York – were significantly impacted by flooding and infrastructure damage caused by the severe rain, wind, and snow storm that battered the state on Tuesday night into Wednesday. The State stands ready to assist other counties impacted by the storm as well.

Governor Janet Mills today praised the Maine Senate’s overwhelming confirmation of retired U.S. Army Brigadier General Diane Dunn to lead the Maine National Guard and serve as Commissioner of the Department of Defense, Veterans and Emergency Management. The Senate approved her nomination by a vote of 33–1.

In anticipation of a winter storm expected to create hazardous driving conditions during tomorrow morning's commute, Governor Janet Mills has delayed the opening of all State of Maine offices tomorrow, Wednesday, January 10, 2024 until 12:00 noon.

"With snow, rain, and wind expected to impact much of Maine tomorrow, I encourage all Maine people to drive carefully and cautiously during their commute," said Governor Mills. "Please be sure to give plow trucks, utility crews, and emergency first responders plenty of space as they work to keep us safe."

Cross Office Building to remain closed all day to remove damaged scaffolding

Grant awards to six Maine schools will significantly expand educator apprenticeship opportunities

Governor Janet Mills announced today that her Administration has awarded six schools a total of $985,000 to recruit, train, and retain educators through pre-apprenticeship and apprenticeship pilot programs. Associate Commissioner of Labor Samantha Dina and Associate Commissioner of Education Megan Welter announced the awards during a Zoom press conference today.

Governor Janet Mills announced today that State of Maine offices will close at 1:00 p.m. today, Monday, December 18, 2023 to allow State employees to travel home safely in the wind storm, which is expected to grow stronger throughout the day.

“I have directed the early closure of State of Maine offices to allow State employees to commute home before dark,” said Governor Mills. “With the storm expected to grow stronger in the coming hours, I encourage all Maine people to be safe and vigilant and to exercise caution when traveling.”

IRS responded to Commissioner Figueroa's recent letter correcting their decision and confirming energy relief payments will not be subject to Federal taxation.

In response to an appeal from the Mills Administration, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) announced today that Maine's $450 Winter Energy Relief Payments will not be subject to federal tax.
