Command of the Maine Air National Guard changed during a ceremony held at the 101st Air Refueling Wing on April 3. Outgoing commander Brig. Gen. Steven D. Michaud transferred command to Brig. Gen. Frank W. Roy. Maj. Gen. Douglas A. Farnham, Maine's Adjutant General, presided over the ceremony where a large crowd Airmen, and family and friends of both commanders watched. Symbolizing the transfer of the command, Michaud passed the organizational guidon of the Maine Air National Guard to Roy.

For over five months members of the Maine Air National Guard have supported Operation Allies Welcome at Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst, New Jersey. The airmen are there as part of Task Force Liberty, which supports housing, medical, transportation, and logistical operations for vulnerable Afghans as they arrive in the United States. A number of these Afghans worked alongside U.S. forces in Afghanistan for the past 20 years.

More than 100 soldiers from the Maine Army National Guard have returned home from a 10-month deployment to Africa. Senior leaders greeted the soldiers on the flight line Saturday before they marched inside to music played by the 195th Maine Army National Guard Band — and the waiting arms of family members, WABI-TV reported. The soldiers were from Bravo Company, 3rd Battalion, 172nd Infantry Regiment, according to a post on the Maine National Guard’s Facebook page.

130 soldiers in the Maine Army National Guard's "B" Company left in March of last year to complete a number of missions in the Horn of Africa region. Families and friends gathered at the Army Aviation Support Facility in Bangor Saturday to welcome home soldiers in the Maine Army National Guard's "B" Company. The 130 soldiers were deployed in March of last year to provide security and complete a number of other missions in several countries in the Horn of Africa region. They were part of the 86th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, a multi-state National Guard brigade headquartered in Vermont.

Administration’s plan to expand hospital capacity is expected to open an estimated 80 additional inpatient hospitals beds to care for Maine people.

Governor Janet Mills announced today that members of the Maine National Guard will deploy to ten health care facilities across the state this week to help relieve hospitals experiencing capacity challenges and to maintain access to inpatient health care for Maine people amid a sustained surge of COVID-19. The Mills Administration anticipates that these actions, coupled with the other steps it has taken in partnership with the Federal government and Maine’s health care systems, will provide an estimated total of 80 additional inpatient hospital beds to care for Maine people.

    Governor Janet Mills and Commissioner of the Maine Department of Defense, Veterans and Emergency Management Major General Douglas Farnham today thanked the 488th Military Police Company for their service and wished them a safe deployment to the Southwest border. The unit's approximately 120 service members, who are deploying under federal Title 10 mobilization orders, departed Maine today to provide support to U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP).     The drizzle tapered out just in time for attendees to stay dry as the 185th Engineer Support Company cut the ribbon on their new home on September 10, a project nearly three years in the making.

    "Our thanks to Devoe Construction, WBRC, and all subcontractors involved," said Maj. Gen. Douglas Farnham, Maine's adjutant general. "We all recognize the challenges in a project like this, under normal circumstances. But with over 18 months of responding to COVID, my guess is the challenges were extraordinary. Thank you to our Congressional delegation. We are very lucky in Maine to have delegation willing to work together on issues related to the National Guard – their support is critical to making this type of project possible."

    Maine's Own 195th Army Band Embarks on Summer Tour [readMedia]

    The Maine National Guard's 195th Army Band will conduct a series of concerts across Maine from June 30 to July 12, 2021.

    "We in the Maine National Guard are proud to have been involved in the COVID-19 response in a number of ways - it's what we do, supporting our nation, state, and communities when they call," said Maj. Gen. Douglas Farnham, Maine's adjutant general. "But we're especially glad to be returning to this type of community support as well, providing an opportunity for family and friends to come out and enjoy some music with their neighbors. The 195th has been practicing hard, and we'd love to see you out at a concert near you."

    The 195th is comprised of approximately 40 musicians from across Maine. The unit performs in a variety of forms, to include marching and concert bands, and smaller pop/jazz ensembles. The unit is assigned to the 120th Regional Support Group in Bangor and has been in service since April of 1926. The 195th is led by Chief Warrant Officer 4 Brady Harris and 1st Sgt. Victoria Cox.

    Maine Army National Guard Counselors Receive Consecutive Military Entrance Awards [readMedia]

    The Maine Army National Guard (MEARNG) guidance counselors at the Military Entrance Processing Station (MEPS) received the Army National Guard MEPS of the Year award for fiscal year 2020 and 2019 on Tuesday, June 8, 2021.

    Sgt. 1st Class Kimberly Richardson, one of the MEARNG MEPS guidance counselors who received the award said, "Receiving this award not once but twice is an honor. We are humbled by the praise we have received at the highest levels of the National Guard."

    MEPS around the country are where enlistees from all components go to process and qualify for accession into the military. Maj. Jeremy Allie is the Portland, Maine MEPS commander explained the role of MEPS.

    County National Guard Unit Gives Employers A Lift [readMedia]

    Several employers and supervisors were present on June 5 as the 185th Engineer Support Company hosted a "boss lift" supported by the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR) program and the Maine Army National Guard's Army Aviation Support Facility (AASF).

    Despite the name, the event was not limited to only a helicopter ride. In addition to viewing the northern Maine woods from a UH-60 Black Hawk, employers had the opportunity to meet unit and state level Maine Army National Guard leadership, take part in a virtual weapons training simulation, view equipment and training demonstrations, and tour the brand new Northern Maine Readiness Center (NMRC). The 185th is in the early stages of occupying the new headquarters building which began construction in 2018.

    Maine General Officer Selected for National Assignment [Press Herald]

    The Maine National Guard announced that Brig. Gen. Diane L. Dunn of Newburgh has been selected for a six-month tour as a deputy commanding general for U.S. Army North at Fort Sam Houston, Texas. Dunn’s new position is primarily focused on defense support to civil authorities, or DSCA, a type of military operations where warfighting capabilities and equipment are brought to bear to aid federal, state and local governments during domestic emergencies and disaster relief efforts. This is a temporary duty assignment in addition to her current position.

    Soldiers, airmen and civilian employees stand outside Camp Chamberlain, the Maine National Guard's joint force headquarters in Augusta, Maine. Full time personnel had the option of donning purple April 21, 2021, in lieu of military uniform as a way of observing the Month of the Military Child. When any service member makes the decision to serve, so does that individual's family. Maine's Purple Up Day provided an opportunity to honor the sacrifices made by children in military families.

    Governor Janet Mills today swore in Peter J. Rogers of Yarmouth as Director of the Maine Emergency Management Agency (MEMA). Rogers has served as Acting Director of MEMA since June 2019, his second stint as Acting Director, and as Deputy Director since 2014. His nomination was approved unanimously by the Joint Standing Committee on Criminal Justice and Public Safety and the Maine Senate.

    “Peter Rogers’ skills and wealth of emergency management experience position him well to lead MEMA,” said Governor Mills. “I thank him for his willingness to serve in this important position and look forward to working with him to protect the safety of Maine people.”

    “It is an honor to serve the people of Maine and to lead MEMA, an agency that I am proud to have been part of since 2014,” said Director Rogers. “The talented staff at MEMA work hard day-in and day-out to protect our people and our state. I look forward to continuing that work with them and am grateful for the Governor’s confidence.”

    Rogers has also served as Deputy Commissioner of the Department of Defense, Veterans and Emergency Management after working in various roles within the Department for sixteen years. He also previously served as Communications Director in the Governor’s Office. He is a veteran of the U.S. Army, where he served for 22 years. Rogers, 57, is a graduate of Norwich University in Vermont. He lives in Yarmouth with his wife and has five children.

    Commissioner Douglas Farnham: Priorities for Department of Defense, Veterans & Emergency Management [Maine Public]

    Maj. Gen. Douglas A. Farnham has served as Commissioner for the Department of Defense, Veterans and Emergency Management since 2016, and was re-appointed by Gov. Janet Mills in 2019. Farnham also serves as the adjutant general, Maine National Guard. Farnham will discuss his priorities, from the National Guard to veterans issues to how to deal with weather emergencies and other crises facing Maine.

    Guests Gen. Farnham, pilot, joined the Maine Air National in 1991, commanded the 101st Air Refueling Wing in the Maine Air National Guard before being appointed as adjutant general.
