The State Fire Marshal’s Office Inspections Division is organized into three sections: the Northern Inspection Division, the Southern Inspection Division and the Plans Review Division.
The Northern and Southern Inspection Divisions are responsible for conducting inspections throughout the State of Maine to ensure compliance with applicable fire and life safety regulations. Inspection services include, but are not limited to, childcare facilities, healthcare facilities, board and care facilities, dance license inspections, theater license inspections, firework displays, motor vehicle racing events, circuses and amusement rides.
The Plans Review Division is responsible for reviewing building construction plans, fire protection system plans, including fire alarm systems and commercial cooking hood systems, sprinkler systems, and aboveground storage tank installations. Reviews are conducted to ensure compliance with minimum life safety codes and American with Disabilities Act (ADA) standards. In addition to plans review responsibilities, this division also supports and assists inspection activities statewide.
The primary mission of these divisions is to promote fire prevention and protect public safety. The State Fire Marshal’s Office acts as the State’s primary enforcer of fire and life safety codes. This mission is accomplished through public education, inspections, and comprehensive plans review services.
