Job Description:

The Staff Accountant position performs professional accounting work in support of financial operations within the Office of the Attorney General. This position ensures compliance with both state and federal regulations, established accounting principles, and internal policies.

REPRESENTATIVE TASKS:(A position may not be assigned all the duties listed, nor do the listed examples include all the duties that may be assigned).

  • Review and process invoices, procurement documents, travel reimbursements, and vendor payments in compliance with state policies and procedures.
  • Reconcile accounts payable, receivable, and other financial records, initiate corrective actions, and recommend process changes in order to eliminate future problems.
  • Verify accuracy of accounts applied, approvals, and documentation for all transactions in order to ensure compliance with accounting standards and operating procedures.
  • Respond to inquiries from both internal and external staff regarding financial transactions and procedures.
  • Assist in preparation of periodic financial reporting, revenue transfers, and statements.

KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:(These are required to successfully perform the work assigned).

  • Knowledge of GAAP/GASB and governmental accounting standards and principles.
  • Strong attention to detail, analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
  • Knowledge of financial management systems and Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook).
  • Ability to interpret and apply state and federal financial regulations and policies.
  • Ability to verify fiscal source documents and application of fees, refunds, collections, and discounts.
  • Ability to prepare narrative and financial statements, projections, and analyze information from various reports.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to recommend improvements in accounting controls and business practices.
  • Ability to work independently and collaborate effectively within a team environment.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:(Entry level knowledge, skills, and/or abilities may be acquired through, BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO the following course work/training and/or experience).

Education, training, and/or experience in accounting, business administration, financial planning, budgeting, or another related field demonstrating competency in analyzing data and records, interpreting policies, rules, and laws, identifying process and procedure deficiencies, and developing practical solutions.
