Education, Resources and Support - It's Up to All of Us.Welcome to the Maine Youth Suicide Prevention Program WebsiteThe Maine Youth Suicide Prevention Program has been in existence since 1998. The mission of the program is to:
Suicidal behavior is both complex and frightening. The impact of a youth suicide is devastating to family, friends, and the whole community and the frequency of youth suicide in Maine is cause for concern. From 2001-2005 there were 101 deaths by suicide in the 10-24 year old population in Maine. Suicide is the second leading cause of death for youth aged 15-24, accounting for an average of 20 deaths annually. Of every 5 suicides, 4 are males. Suicidal behavior among young people is a much larger public health concern than what is represented in death statistics. About 1 in 7 high school students report seriously considering suicide in the past 12 months. Suicide attempts by young people are more likely to result in an emergency department or hospital visit than among older people. According to national estimates, there may be 25 or more non-fatal suicide attempts for every completed suicide Everyone can help prevent youth suicide. This site is designed to help you learn more about youth suicide and how you can help. Whether you are a youth looking for help for a friend or yourself, a parent, or other interested person, this site will provide you with education, resources, and support. Youth suicide prevention is up to all of us.
