Maine's E-waste Law
The responsibility for collection, transportation, and recycling of electronics is shared among residents, municipalities, consolidators, and manufacturers.
The disposal of TVs and computer monitors is prohibited in Maine, thus each municipality must provide its residents with a means to recycle their televisions and computer monitors (or ship these wastes out of state for disposal).

Maine Joins State Electronics Challenge
Maine is one of the first northeastern states to join the Northeast State Electronics Challenge, a voluntary program that encourages state, regional, and local governments, including schools, colleges, universities, and other public entities, to face the new challenges posed by the electronics waste stream. The SEC is committed to helping states:
-
Purchase greener computers.
-
Reduce the impacts of computers during use.
-
Manage obsolete computer products in an environmentally safe way.
The states of , Maine, Connecticut, Delaware, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, and Vermont all participated in the development of the SEC – Northeast Pilot with its sponsoring organization, the Northeast Recycling Council (NERC).
With funding from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, NERC and the SEC are providing resources to help state, local, and regional government and agencies.
Maine joins the State of New Hampshire, the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection, and Vermont Department of Conservation as the first to join the program.
