Waste Management & Recycling Program

School Participation

Maine Recycles Week is often thought of as taking place in the schools. Schools are indeed an important part. There is a school competition.

The first criterion in the school competition looks at recycling in the schools - new or rejuvenated. Recycling should take place in the schools, and Maine Recycles Week gives us the opportunity to evaluate what we have in place and what we might want.

The next piece in the school competition was to see what createive ways the schools managed to get the word out about recycling. Often times this was found to be a local poster contest, which has now been accepted as a contest of its own. Those posters recognized by the Maine Recycles Week Steering Committee will be used in the next year's Maine Recycles Week promotion of recycling.

Another piece of the school competition recognizes the instruction phase. Today recycling is a large part of the study of sustainability. If recycling is in the curriculum that is great; however it is also wonderful to see how the pieces of enviornmental education can work together to reduce the carbon footprint and work against global warming and for the conservtion of our natural resources.

All together the school participation part of Maine Recycles Week is meant to suggest that no one gets left out. Join in and let us know at the State Planning Office what's going on and help us to thank you and share your success with others.

We are reminded that Maine Recycles Week is for the communities of the State of Maine. Schools in our cities and towns often are the center of the community. In many cases, teachers, students, and staff were on board from the very beginning of Maine Recycles Week. To recognize their contribution, the school participation contest was started.
