School Contest Rules
- Any school, public, private or home, in the State of Maine may participate in Maine Recycles Week. By participating in Maine Recycles Week you will be contributing to a statewide campaign to promote recycling and buying recycled and competing for cash prizes.
- The Maine Recycles Week Steering Committee will judge each school according to the specific criteria outlined below. Winning schools and posters will be judged following MRW. Cash and other awards will be made in December following MRW. Cash awards are to be used for educational or environmental programs in the school only.
- In order to officially participate in Maine Recycles Week and be eligible for the prizes, your school must contact the State Planning Office by phone or by e-mail by November 1, 2007, (7 days prior to the beginning of MRW). As soon as your activities are completed, you must report your successes (indicating which activities you completed and elaborating on the details of any activity or event – sell your success to the committee with articles, pictures, or narrative) no later than 5:00 pm on November 25 to the address below.
Any of the following activities are considered "official participation" and will qualify you for the random prize drawing:
- a) incorporation of waste management & recycling activities into your curriculum for the week of November 8th-15th;
- b) participation in the MRW Poster Contest (link above);
- c) establishment of a new recycling program or rejuvenation of an existing program;
- d) holding a special recycling or buy recycled event;
- e) working with the local recycling program and/or media to promote recycling in the community;
- f) field trip(s) to a local recycling center, landfill, recycling business, incinerator, etc.;
- g) sponsor a Trash-To-Art Contest;
- h) invite local recycling contacts to speak in your classrooms;
- i) put on a recycled content fashion show for your community.
The more of these activities that you incorporate into your MRW plans, however, the better your chances of being chosen as one of the top three schools. Please see the Judging Criteria listed under #4 below. If you have any questions regarding whether your activity(s) will be considered "official participation," please call Bruce White at 1-800-662-4545.
