Program Goals and Responsibilities

Our Three Fold Mission

• Collect, synthesize, and report on solid waste programs and data

• Assist municipalities in their efforts to improve recycling and composting performance

• Ensure sufficient, environmentally secure, disposal capacity for Maine's municipal solid waste

The Maine Legislature's goal for 2009: Recycle 50% of the state's municipal solid waste.

A statewide recycling rate of 36.4% was achieved in 2005, over 700,000 tons of recyclables did not end up in a landfill!

This recycling effort was achieved thanks to the combined efforts of Maine residents, municipalities and businesses.

Maine continues to rank highly among other states in overall recycling efforts.
