Truancy, Dropout, Alternative Education

Dear Local Homeless Liaisons,

I need you to review the letter and keep a record of evacuees that your community may receive due to Hurricane Katrina.  We are steadily receiving information from states that are already receiving refugees from Hurricane Katrina and from states who are extending invitations to refugees to come to their state for shelter.  Several states have already enacted policies regarding to school enrollment issues for these refugee students.  The Department of Education needs information and data regarding numbers of students that are arriving and how the SEAs and LEAs are addressing their needs.  Please note if refugees and their families have been invited to take shelter in your state.  Please send any memos from your State Superintendent or Governor's office ETC regarding this matter.  Also, please provide information on your most impacted LEAs: who, where and what are most significant problems and effective strategies. Please direct all responses to me at the above address.  NCHE will compile responses and share them with Gary Rutkin and the other national partners.   We would appreciate an initial response by Friday, September 9, 2005 and we would also appreciate updates as changes occur in regards to this situation in your state.
