The Community Schools Team provides support, guidance, and resources to schools across Maine looking to advance community school strategies to improve student outcomes. The Community Schools initiative is grounded in the vision and mission of the Maine Department of Education by providing learning environments that are trusted centers of the community and help all Maine students reach their full potential and leave school prepared for work, life, and post-secondary education opportunities. Community Schools are committed to forming strong partnerships with families and organizations to provide well-rounded educational opportunities and wrap-around support to meet the whole child's needs.

According to the Coalition for Community Schools: "Community schools strategy transforms a school into a place where educators, local community members, families, and students work together to strengthen conditions for student learning and healthy development. As partners, they organize in- and out-of-school resources, supports, and opportunities so that young people thrive."
