DIRECT CERTIFICATION

The Direct Certification list will have major changes and improvements for school year 2008-2009.  Maine received a $100,000.00 grant to improve the DHHS Direct Cert list and procedures for local schools.

Improvements will be available in August 2008.  The exact date is not determined, however no later then August 15, 2008.

Improvements Include:
A searchable data base by the superintendent.  The criteria for the search will be announced in August.  This feature will be available to all private and public schools.

The data base will be downloadable to excel(.xls) or text file(.csv) by superintendents.  The list must be kept confidential.  The data list can still be printed as it has been in the past.

The DHHS letters will be printed this year but this is the final year.  Case workers will still have the ability to provide a letter to clients if requested at Regional Offices

The data base will be added to each month with new names.  The list will be updated July 1st of each year automatically.  During the school year names will not be removed.

If assistance is needed or questions arise you can contact the Child Nutrition Services Office 624-6843

Chapter 51 and soda in schools

It has come to our attention that some schools have reintroduced soda into their vending machines over the summer.   Note:  Chapter 51 has not changed.  Soda can not be sold on school grounds 24 hours a day, 7 days a week unless the school board has adopted a local policy that allows sales of foods of minimal nutritional value at public and/or community events  or in the teachers room where students do not have access to the machine.  After school is a time of day and is not a public event.

  3. the email address you registered must be active or you need to reregister.

There are very little paper copies mailed.  In a lot of cases the mailed copies never made it to the Food Service staff anyway. ALL MEETINGS AND EVENTS WILL BE ON THE LIST SERVE AND WEB PAGE ONLY!!

So if you have not been getting emails from child.nutrition then your email is not an active account in the list serve.

It is simple to register.

Who is watching the shop?

High School Administration is discovering more issues than originally thought when allowing outside vendors to sell/deliver food on campus.  Vendors are walking into high schools and in some cases walking freely around the school.  Students meet them at a side door or parking lot to complete the transactions. Outside doors are locked but are found propped open so students can reenter without going though the front doors.  Then there is always the question on how the student will properly maintain the proper storing conditions to ensure a healthy wholesome product.  The longer food is kept a room temperature the more danger of food illness.

The Food Service Department is complaining because of lost sales which mean more tax dollars are needed to support the Food Service Program. The district budgets a projected income for Food Service and when outside sales or classroom sales are allowed the budget becomes difficult to obtain.

Several other concerns have come to surface as well.  Districts have all developed a wellness policy that is agreed on and signed by the local school boards.  Is the administration enforcing school district policies or are they creating their own on the fly?  Chapter 051 Rule regarding competitive foods requires school board approval for these deliveries/sales and class food sales.  This includes classes preparing food and offering it for sale.  Classes preparing food for resale must be licensed by DHHS and comply with the Maine Food Code.  It has been observed many times that poor or no sanitation practices are used in classroom cooking sales.  Custodians are complaining about trash and food waste left around the building

The bottom line is leaving the food to the professionals.  Food service staff is trained in all aspects of food storage, preparation and storage.  Food service staff does not interfere with other departments.  One side note to food service staff: there are no guidelines or regulations that prevent food service from selling hats, shirts and office supplies as a revenue maker.
