Student Members

The State Board of Education voted in the spring of 2007 to begin the process that would place two students on the Board -- one junior and one senior. Each year after the year of implementation for high school student participation, a junior high school student would join the Board for a two-year term. Except for vote, students members will have full privileges and responsibilities of membership.

In addition, the State Board of Education applied for and was awarded a grant which calls for engagement of students in identifying candidates and in designing the criteria that will be used to determine who will participate. Maine Youth Action Network (MYAN) has graciously agreed to assist us and support the students with this process.

The State Board held a Youth Forum on August 14, 2007, at Bates College to meet with prospective students and begin the process of designing the necessary criteria. Notes from August 14 meeting. -------- Youth Member Job Description.

In April of 2008, Governor Baldacci appointed Honor Wilkinson from Calais High School and Justin Chenette from Thornton Academy in Saco to the State Board of Education.
