Program Description– written by Kids Club After School Programs

The Kids Club After School program is a need based, educational support program of the Sanford School Department. We began in January of 2005 with the help of a 21st Century Community Learning Center grant. We currently offer this program to students in grades 4 through 8 at Carl J Lamb, Willard Elementary and the Sanford Junior High.

Our program runs Monday through Thursday and is offered in 3 school year sessions and 1 summer session. Each session is 6 weeks long. Students are invited to participate 1 session at a time. Participation in 1 or more sessions is based on student academic need, teacher recommendation, and availability. This program includes a daily snack, recess, scheduled homework time, 20 minutes of daily reading, tutorial services and enrichment activities each day. Transportation home is offered free of charge with pre-arranged drop off points (Sanford only). Enrolled students make a commitment to attend regularly, sign behavior contracts, and follow all program rules.

Tutoring and homework assistance is given by certified by certified teachers, educational technicians, trained staff and high school volunteers. Using the district’s Everyday math curriculum and other research based learning tools our program staff is able to help students complete their homework, prepare for tests, reinforce and support the school day learning objectives and give students who may be at-risk of academic failure the reinforcement they need to help them succeed.

By reviewing student grades, NWEA RIT growth, and student/parent surveys given every 6 weeks we are able to carefully monitor our effectiveness and program satisfaction. Classroom teachers are consulted for individual focus areas to target academic needs and encouraged to keep in close communication with program staff. First year data analysis revealed that Kids Club participants are making noticeable growth in RIT scores in reading. Our second year program goals include targeting math growth through specific content area and concept development through enrichment activities like cooking, chess club, quilting, mapping, and woodworking classes.

Each session ends with a family night that includes student demonstrations and presentations, guest speakers, and family fun activities. Our newsletter and website www.kidsclubnews.com keep parents informed and engaged in their child’s after school learning opportunities.
