Program Description – written by Center for Communication

Curriculum in Reading

Two Speech Language Pathology staff members have received training as reading specialists in addition to their graduate degrees in Communication Disorders through Massachusetts General Hospital’s Graduate Program. Four SLP staff are trained in the Lindamood Phonemic Sequencing (LIPS) Program. All SLP staff are trained in the Telian-Cas Learning Concepts (TLC). The staff as a whole is quite familiar with other reading programs as well.

Delivery of Services Model

Small group 1:3 maximum with a Speech Language Pathologist present and responsible for the instructional level of the group. At times, a student will be seen 1:1 because of significant needs which can not be addressed as effectively in a small group setting. It is not uncommon for a student to begin 1:1 and then move to a small group setting as their skills and abilities progress. If a group contains more than 3 students, a second staff member assists.

Instructional Strategies

  • Multi modality to reading as outlined by: Lindamood Bell Phonemic Sequencing, Telian-Cas Learning Concepts (TLC)
  • Visual imagery as outlined by Visualizing and Verbalizing (VV) (Lindamood)
  • Sight word development – Seeing Stars (Lindamood)
  • Pneumonic strategies as outlined by Great Leaps Reading Program
  • Segmentation and Blending of words
  • Generalizing of skills into connected text
