In the spring of 2011 the Maine Department of Education launched the Maine Arts Assessment Initiative (MAAI).

The goal of the initiative is to create an environment in Maine where assessment in arts education is an integral part of the work all arts educators do to deepen student learning in the arts.

MAAI includes:

  • Thirty-eight teacher leaders were selected to participate in professional development institutes focusing on leadership, assessment, technology, and creativity, using a student-centered philosophy. Teacher leaders developed and facilitate workshops throughout the state. The 2011-12 schedule is archived below and the 2012-13 is listed below. Workshops include hour-long sessions as well as all day workshops at no cost, with contact hours provided.
  • “Another Teacher’s Story” series of blog posts highlighting the work of Maine arts educators are posted at http://meartsed.wordpress.com.
  • Seven professional development webinars facilitated by Rob Westerberg and Catherine Ring are archived below with the meeting plans. Commissioner of Education Stephen Bowen was a guest on the June 2012 webinar.
  • Forty-five arts educators have taken graduate courses available through the New England Institute for Teacher Education.
  • About 600 Maine arts educators have participated in one or more professional development opportunities to date.

A website with the detailed MAAI information including resources from the professional development teacher leader institutes is located at http://maineartsassessment.pbworks.com.

Webinars

The MLTI and Department of Education hosted webinars throughout the 2011-2012 school year on the Maine Arts Assessment Initiative and how it impacts teaching and learning in our schools.  Visual art educator Catherine Ring and music educator Rob Westerberg, and guests hosted the webinar series.

The 7 webinars were designed to engage teachers and administrators alike. Each program addressed the key components of the Initiative. These webinars have an accompanying "meeting plan" that school leaders can use or adapt to facilitate faculty meetings, conversations, or study groups looking at quality arts assessment practices. The "meeting plans" are posted with each webinar.
