2009 Summer Junior Engineering and Mathematics Program
The Maine Junior Engineering Technical society in coordination with professional development program of Bates College is organizing a summer program, (week of August 10th and August 17th ) for students diagnosed with High Functioning Autism and/or Asperger’s Syndrome of grades 3-11. The program is a day camp at Camp Roosevelt at the Little Fitts Pond in Eddington. Parents and campers have the opportunity to stay at the Lucerne Inn or at the Ronald MacDonald House for the days of the week long program. We are serving about 60-70 students with this program every year. From the support of parents and professionals who visited our program we think that our program is a wonderful asset for high functioning students on the autism spectrum and it has the potential for developing a model program for professional development. Our program is a technology based camp(Lego robotics, problem solving, puzzles and modular origami) with special emphasis on team work, executive function skills (planning, organizing and goal setting, time management, etc.) and social connectedness, all of which are important for educational and employment success. Providing the program at a lakefront resort is especially beneficial as it enhances the social opportunities through swimming, boating, fishing, canoeing, sailing and other recreational activities. The full cost of the program is $290 per week. Partial scholarships are available. Flex fund may be used to cover the camp fee. If you have questions or want to receive a registration form, please contact Eva Szillery by e-mail: evaszillery-mmsets@me.acadia.net or call 207 356 0207.
