INFORMATIONAL LETTER NO:  108

POLICY CODE:  BA

TO:                Superintendents of Schools

FROM:            Susan A. Gendron, Commissioner

DATE:             May 21, 2007

RE:                 Release of the Suggested Model for Reorganizing School Units

The suggested model for reorganizing school units and related materials are now ready for distribution.  Rather than attach large files to this Informational Letter, we have posted the list of suggested regional school units, maps, and the criteria used to develop them on the Department of Education website.  You can find this information at www.maine.gov/education/supportingschools

I wish to thank you again for your assistance and participation in this process.  Your continued involvement, guidance, and feedback will be necessary as the Legislature determines a final version of the legislation, and we begin the process of implementing it.

You can listen to the presentation to the Education Committee, scheduled for today at 1:00 p.m., online at: http://janus.state.me.us/legis/audio/education_cmte.html.

In addition, I invite you to participate in a conference call today at 3:00 p.m. so that I can walk you through the materials and answer your questions about how we arrived at the model, and describe expected next steps.  I would request that this conference call be limited to superintendents (and immediate staff, as appropriate) only, as the phone system will allow for only 125 callers to participate.  We will provide a number of venues for others to have their questions answered over the coming days and weeks.

You may call in to: (888) 560-3504. Your participant pass code is: 179040.  Should the public session with the Education Committee go longer than expected, we may have to delay the conference call.  Staff from my office will activate the call at 3:00 p.m. and notify you of the new time.  We will send a notice by e-mail, as well.

If you have any questions about the materials, how we developed the suggested model, what happens from here, etc., please contact Ray Poulin or Norm Higgins at 624-6638.

Please contact David Connerty-Marin at 624-6880 or at david.connerty-marin@maine.gov with any questions regarding the conference call.
