RE:            Clarification on Public Hearing on Maine Department of Education Regulation 131– The Maine Federal, State, and Local Accountability Standards (specifically, Reading, Mathematics, and Science)       

 

            This Informational Letter is to clarify that the purpose for the October 23, 2006 meeting is to provide public hearing as part of the rule-making process for Maine Department of Education Regulation 131 – The Maine Federal, State, and Local Accountability Standards which specifically address Reading, Mathematics, and Science.  Only those parts of the Revised Maine Learning Results included in the Maine Department of Education Regulation 131 are subject to this formal rule-making process. The Department of Education will provide an opportunity for feedback on all the standards, performance indicators and descriptors for all the content areas of Revised Maine Learning Results: Parameters for Essential Instruction and Graduation Requirements at a later date.

            As noted in Informational Letters # 27 (September 29, 2006), and # 36 (October 11, 2006), the Maine Department of Education will conduct a public hearing on October 23, 2006 to receive public comment on Maine Department of Education Regulation 131 – The Maine Federal, State, and Local Accountability Standards.  This document outlines Maine’s accountability standards and performance indicators in Reading, Mathematics, and Science as required by the federal No Child Left Behind Act.

            From 3:00-6:00 PM, representatives from the Maine Department of Education will receive comment related to the standards and performance indicators contained in Maine Department of Education Regulation 131 – The Maine Federal, State, and Local Accountability Standards which include Reading, Mathematics, and Science.

            Individuals attending the public hearing should come ready to deliver prepared statements related to these areas.  The public hearing will be held at the following sites:

  • Room 103 A & B of the Cross State Office Building, Augusta, Maine (ATM site of origin)

  • ATM Room, Presque Isle High School, Presque Isle, Maine

  • ATM Room, Bangor Library, Bangor, Maine

  • ATM Room, Machias High School, Machias, Maine

            Written comments on Maine Department of Education Regulation 131 – The Maine Federal, State and Local Accountability Standards may be submitted to the Department of Education by filling out and returning the online public comment form available at:  http://www.maine.gov/education/lres/review/revised_mlr_standards.htm.

            At a later date, the Maine Department of Education will conduct a feedback session to collect input on the Revised Maine Learning Results:  Parameters for Essential Instruction and Graduation Requirements.  Information regarding this feedback session will be forthcoming.  Individuals may also provide written feedback by filling out and returning the online feedback form available at:  http://www.maine.gov/education/lres/review/revised_mlr_standards.htm.
