Dear School People,
We celebrate you!
Our project called, “Celebrate School People” - acknowledging the importance of the over 41,000 Maine School People who serve our schoolchildren in our schools in Maine. School People refers to all of you who work in our school buildings— teachers, crossing guards, cafeteria workers, bus drivers, custodians, administrative assistants, social workers, coaches, ed technicians, librarians, nurses, substitutes and administrators – everyone. Together you comprise the full school community, influencing the culture and daily environment of children across the state.
It is time that the story of the whole School People community be told and honored. This is the purpose of Celebrate School People. It is our way to say Thank You to each person who has devoted their service lives to educating our children.
On May 15th a press conference was held at the Statehouse Hall of Flags followed by a kickoff reception at the Blaine House. School People Ambassadors from across the state joined with us and Commissioner of Education, Sue Gendron, First Lady Karen Baldacci, representatives from Maine’s Congressional Delegation and other School People supporters to announce that October 18, 2006 has been legally proclaimed “Celebrate School People Day” by Governor Baldacci. This is a national project launching in Maine and is long overdue.
Over the summer, we will be gathering stories about School People in and outside of Maine. We will ask people of all vocations the same question, “Do you remember School People who believed in you and inspired you to be the best you can be?”
On September 8, 2006, at 10:00 a.m., we are asking that every school in Maine participate in a statewide-synchronized lottery drawing. The lottery will contain the names of every person who works in your school building. Eight names will be drawn; four as our guests and four as substitutes if the guests cannot attend.
On October 18, 2006, all four thousand School People representatives will gather at the Augusta Civic Center to be celebrated with music, entertainment and tributes of many kinds. Paul Stookey and Paul Sullivan are two of the celebrity musical guests who will join us to honor you! Many others will surprise you. On this day, we encourage all parents, community members and children to create their own celebration of School People in their schools communities.
Finally, at the October event one school name will be drawn. This school will be invited to host a liveCelebrate School People show in their community. .We request that your school invite a young person and parent to draw the names on the October 18, 2006.
Please help us to make this a wonderful event in October. We would love to hear your own stories of appreciation, so email us at email@example.com. Thank you for another great year supporting the children. Enjoy your summer months and we’ll be in touch in the fall.
