TO:                   All Superintendents and Business Managers

FROM:             Susan A. Gendron, Commissioner

DATE:              June 29, 2005

SUBJECT:       34th Annual Student Transportation Safety Conference – July 27 - 29, 2005 at Sugarloaf/USA

The Department of Education is pleased to join with the Maine Association for Pupil Transportation (MAPT) and the Maine State Police in sponsoring the 34 th Annual Student Transportation Safety Conference.   The conference will be held on July 27 - 29, 2005 at Sugarloaf/USA, Carrabassett Valley, Maine.

This year the program will include workshops and skill competitions that focus on the transportation of students with special needs and on bus fleet maintenance needs.   Preparation and testing for the new school bus driver license endorsement will also be offered.   This is a significant expansion in scope for this conference and demonstrates commitment by the organizations involved to provide training in safety, best practices, and operating efficiency across the full spectrum of pupil transportation.   Based on past conferences, we expect between 500 and 600 drivers, mechanics and directors to attend the conference.

Attached is a letter of invitation and conference details from Kevin Mallory, President of MAPT.   I join Kevin in urging you to support participation by your pupil transportation leaders, drivers and mechanics and in encouraging you to attend all or any part of the conference program.   Pupil transportation is an essential support service for our educational program in Maine.   It is an area where safety is a constant concern, cost is rising rapidly, service requirements are becoming more complex, and efficiency and cost effectiveness are hard to measure.

If you have any questions or need additional information, please contact Kevin Mallory via email at: MALLOK@portlandschools.org, George Jones, MAPT Executive Director at jonesgp@attglobal.net or Harvey Boatman at: harvey.boatman@maine.gov

Please join us at Sugarloaf/USA for a great program.
