Subject: School Bus Safety Recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has recently published a revised School Bus Safety Assurance Program Recall Listing: January 1998 through June 2004. This listing is available on the Internet at the following address: http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov When you reach this address, select Recalls from the POPULAR INFORMATION list and then select School Bus Recalls. Make sure that you reference the 2004 update.
The Department of Education strongly recommends each school administrative unit carefully review the recall information to determine if any of your vehicles are affected by a recall. Each district is encouraged to develop and implement a program that would ensure that all outstanding recall remedy work is completed on each school bus in the district’s fleet as soon as possible and prior to the beginning of the 2004-2005 school year. If the recall issue is imminently hazardous to the continued safe operation of the vehicle, the vehicle should be removed from operation and the recall remedy completed before the vehicle is returned to service. Contractors who own and/or operate school buses for your district should also be advised of the safety recalls and required to provide documentation to the district to ensure that all recall work is completed.
