INFORMATIONAL LETTER NO: 41
POLICY CODE: CGD
TO: Superintendents of Schools
FROM: J. Duke Albanese, Commissioner
DATE: February 6, 2003
SUBJECT: Consolidated State Application Accountability Workbook
For State Grants under Title IX, Part C, Section 9302 of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (Public Law 107-110)
The Consolidated State Application Accountability Workbook has been submitted to the United States Department of Education and is now available on our website at http://www.maine.gov/education/nclb/state%20app/summary.htm.
As you know, Maine’s approach to educating our children has led to great results in terms of academic performance. Maine’s students have placed first, second, or third place in six of the last seven years of the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) tests. Maine also scores well ahead of the nation based on gender and poverty. These are results to be proud of, but they also show that we have a long way to go if we are to meet the full promise of Learning Results – high performance for each student.
In Maine, it is not enough for all our students to show strong academic performance. As we prepare young people for the adult lives they will lead, it is critically important that they learn to be good people and practice healthy behaviors. Maine’s goal for proactively establishing safe schools where students can grow and be safe intellectually, physically, and emotionally is at the heart of the learning environment we provide.
In preparing this document, great thought and care have gone into keeping the child truly at the center of our work. We thank the many people who contributed their ideas, expertise, and probing questions over the course of the thinking consulting, and writing.
Personnel at the U.S. Department of Education have reviewed this document and have scheduled a Peer Review with Maine DOE personnel, February 27, 2003, in Augusta to discuss the contents.
