SUBJECT: Recommendations for responding to students with head lice.
- Please forward to school principals. –
The Maine School Health Advisory Committee has developed new recommendations for schools responding to students found with head lice. The recommendations are posted in the Maine School Health Manual found on the Department of Education web site at www.maine.gov/education/sh/index.html. The guidelines developed are in compliance with the American Academy of Pediatrics and with the National Association of School Nurses.
The significant changes in the recommendations are:
v Students found to have head lice should not be excluded from school but allowed to remain the day. Parents should be contacted and informed of the need for treatment.
v Students should be allowed to return to school after treatment has begun.
v Routine head checks for head lice are not recommended.
If you have questions about these recommendations, please contact DeEtte Hall, School Nurse Consultant, at 624-6688 or email@example.com.
