RE:                   Advanced Placement (AP) Incentive Program Administrators’ Workshop

On November 26, 2001 the Maine Department of Education and the New England Office of the College Board will host two workshops focused on the Advanced Placement program.  The first workshop will be of special interest for district level administrators, building principals, counselors and AP coordinators.   It will feature a thorough discussion of the Advanced Placement program, addressing such questions as: What is AP and what courses are available through AP? Who should take AP courses? What can schools do to promote strong AP programs? What activities will be occurring in the next year to help you develop programs or improve existing courses?  How can schools develop appropriate AP curricula, including vertical teaming of teachers? There will also be a presentation and discussion of financial and instructional resources available to support AP courses and instruction through workshops and summer institutes supported by the Advanced Placement Incentive Program provided by the U.S. Department of Education through a grant to the Maine Department of Education.  Information about new services and products such as CD-ROMS, satellite delivered AP Test Development Committee conferences, and on-line information from the College Board will also be presented.

The workshop will begin with coffee at 9:30 AM and end by 2:00 PM. Lunch will be provided.  The workshop will be held at the Maine Principals’ Association Professional Development Center. 50 Industrial Drive, Augusta, ME 04338-2468.  If you have any questions or need a map or directions, please contact Wanda Monthey at 624-6831 or at wanda.monthey@state.me.us.

The second workshop is the first in a series of workshops that provide an introduction to Advanced Placement courses.  On November 26, 2001, An Introduction to Advanced Placement Courses in Social Studies will take place at the Augusta Civic Center.  Top College Board Consultants in each of the AP courses will provide overviews of Vertical Teaming in Social Studies and AP courses:  AP Human Geography, AP US History, AP World History, AP European History, AP Psychology, AP US Government, AP Comparative Government.

Participants will leave with information on starting 1-2 AP courses, materials and knowing what is needed to implement a course.
