RE: English/Language Arts Advanced Placement Incentive Program (APIP)
Vertical Teaming Workshop
One component of the grant, received by the Maine Department of Education from the US Department of Education to increase Advanced Placement opportunities in Maine, focuses on the readiness of students to participate in AP experiences through the College Board's Vertical Team concept. On March 9, 2001, from 9:00 AM until 3:00 PM, at the Holiday Inn by the Augusta Civic Center, the Maine Department of Education and the New England Office of the College Board will host an English Vertical Teams Introductory Workshop. The workshop will appeal to teams, or individuals, interested in learning more about the articulation of the English Language Arts curriculum for preparing students, beginning in grade 6, for Advanced Placement courses in English. The ideal vertical team is composed of administrators, guidance counselors, and English teachers from the middle and high schools who will work together to plan instruction.
The College Board will focus on planning and developing Vertical Teams and the Building Success Program, also an initiative of the College Board. This will be a practical workshop with time for discussion about organizing vertical teams in English/Language Arts in grades 6-12 in order to implement a coordinated curriculum enabling more students to be prepared for AP English courses.
The Department of Education will provide information on the alignment of Advanced Placement English goals with the Maine Learning Results. Information on how to access funds through the Advanced Placement Incentive Program, particularly financial support for vertical teaming, will also be provided.
Please complete and return the attached registration form BY March 2, 2001. For more information please contact Estelle Sanders at 624-6625 or Karen Rumery at 624- 6832.
